On Tuesday I began a 7 month internship at @fields_without_fences with Lindsay Napolitano and Johann Rinkens.
Besides being welcomed into a supportive community with 8 other lovely people, I had the pleasure to be a student (one of my favorite things) AND the opportunity walk, squat, bend, reach, carry, be outside, be in community, be in nature - all through the task of clearing branches from the fields.
I say opportunity because these days usually I’m doing (or teaching) these skills in the context of a movement practice and emphasizing to students in my classes as skills that are translatable in daily living. In other words - movement is more than exercise or even a yoga practice.
So, this wasn’t practice! It was integrated into my life #yogaisskillinaction.
The bonus for me was that the grounds aren’t flat and level. They’re variable - different gradients, pocketed with hidden holes, roots, and branches. My attentiveness was required. #mindfulness
Not having to toggle my mind between multiple tasks was very restorative and refreshing. #ekagrata
I love movement for so many reasons - creativity, aesthetics, functionality, enjoyment, efficiency meditation and as a biological imperative. I’m continually working against the strong cultural current to perceive movement as something we separate out from daily living and do like a chore or an escape from daily living. #habitchange #samskara
