A beautiful reunion tonight with a woman who I met at the Bernie Sanders rally in 2016. We had stood in line together for 5 hours in the cold, had been moved close to the front and witnessed the famous sparrow land on his podium. I am in love with this photo. Like in love. Why?  Not because I look bendy or @thesewildlings shot this awesome 30 second exposure while I couldn’t move a muscle and @sayakatoyoga waved these light wands behind me (omg, such a fun night!!!) but because this photo to me shows #strength and #newbeginnings. It shows a new twist of looking at a typical #yogapose when sometimes we get stagnant in the day to day. To #newlife and #goodhealth. We all have the power to move forward. With each day we have the potential for so much more.....it’s only ourselves slowing ourselves down.  There’s always a different way to look at something :)

Day 5 - Pregnancy safe backbend 🙌🏻 Bridge pose. This pose can be a great workout for that butt (it's even better if you place a block between those knees and squeeze, holding it in place as you lift those hips); it opens those shoulders (and your chest if you draw those arms under the body, as shown); it's a great way to get some safe movement in that spine; and can be done as a restorative pose by using a block or bolster under the hips.

Anthony Fox has been playing sitar for 9 years and has performed alongside tabla player Marlin Saner for the 2017 Children's Cancer Association Gala, with the Nowhere Band (members of March Forth Marching Band) in 2017 & 2018 for a sold out 3-night re-creation of the Beatles' Sgt Peppers album, and a monthly residency performance at Corepower Yoga. Anthony has also played solo performances for art openings and the 2017 Everything Matters fundraiser for children with Batten Disease.⁣

Having a fascination with the meditative and complex rhythms of classical Indian music, Marlin Saner  purchased a set of tabla and ten lessons for a very limited introduction to the art. His approach to the practice generally has a more traditional western drum kit feel, with the intention always to tastefully enhance that which the other musicians bring to the stage.⁣

I love my feet. They remind me of my dad, because I have his toes. I love this ugly little solitary tattoo, because it reminds me of being 17 and living in South Africa for a year as an exchange student. I love this mug because it was the first gift my sweet partner ever gave me. I even love that little sticker there because it reminds me of moving in ways that are safe, sensual and fun. I love this sun and shadow because, well, Portland winters. ❤️
But most of all I'm currently loving the work that I'm engaged in. I'm pushing my growth edge as a teacher/leader big time. It's not easy and it's not always comfortable. I am, in fact, not always looking forward to teaching because I know I require myself to show up FULLY. No coasting along, no auto pilot. ❤️
This past weekend I held the second session of my PILOT MENTORSHIP PROGRAM. Our topics were Cultural Appropriation and Social Justice or what I've also dubbed "Who Built This and Who Currently Has Access To It???" We went (and are continuing to go) deep into discussion about how to ACTIVELY PRACTICE AND TEACH YOGA acknowledging these topics and weaving them into our words, cues and guidance. It ain't easy, folx. But it's not that hard either, because when you get down to it, yoga and social justice belong together. Liberation for all or liberation for none. We are bound to one another. 
I promise to do my part, and to show up in all my leadership, mistakes and repair work with humility.

Day 4 - any hip opener - I chose Pigeon pose - it's one of my all time favs! 29.5 weeks pregnant it puts a some strain on my pelvis. I have symphysis pubis dysfunction (did with our first pregnancy too, it just has flared up much sooner this time) 😭 But still trying to find that balance of staying open and not losing my practice, but also not pushing too far.

Day 4 - any hip opener - I chose Pigeon pose - it's one of my all time favs! 29.5 weeks pregnant it puts a some strain on my pelvis. I have symphysis pubis dysfunction (did with our first pregnancy too, it just has flared up much sooner this time) 😭 But still trying to find that balance of staying open and not losing my practice, but also not pushing too far.

Spring is here. 🦋🌷✨ Can you sense the energy and change around you? 
In Ayurveda, (yoga’s sister science) late winter into early spring is Kapha season. 
Kapha consists of the water + earth elements, creating these qualities: cold, heavy, dull and damp. Why is this important to know? Because what’s happening in the weather and environment can have a huge impact within your body and mind.
When Kapha is balanced you feel strong, stable and your immunity is awesome. When it’s out of balance, you can feel lethargic and mentally dull which can trigger allergies and colds. 
To stay balanced, it’s helpful to adjust your diet and daily activities to suit the season!

🏃🏽‍♀️Stay Active! Now’s the perfect time to move out some of that lethargic energy from winter. Whatever type of exercise or movement you enjoy commit to a daily practice. Anything that brings heat and stimulation will be beneficial. 🌤 Wake up early. By rising before sunrise (Kapha time) you’ll begin the day feeling more light, energized and inspired. 🥬 Eat foods that are light, dry and warm to aid digestion. Try adding spices like cinnamon, turmeric and ginger. Drink warm water or tea.
🌈 Change up your routine! If you feel like you’ve gotten “stuck” in any area of your life, try seeking some variety to create inspiration. Look up a new recipe, clean out your closet, try a new hobby and switch it up!

Ahimsa is a concept. It is the total and complete absence of violence from one’s mind, body, and spirit. Ahimsa is about refraining from violent words, actions and thoughts towards oneself and towards others.⁣⠀

Yet in our hectic, scattered, technology driven world we often forget the concept of Ahimsa. And even if we do find time to offer energy and time to other people and things, we don’t always give that same respect, kindness and compassion to ourselves. It is something so simple yet so hard for people to do. As author and teacher, Jon Kabat-Zinn, states, “We are called human beings not human doings.”⁣⠀

Therefore, Namaste is a word that gives us the chance to respect, acknowledge and honor the light within. Instead of dissipating our energies outwardly towards everything that attracts our eye. Namaste allows us to respect the balance that we create through the discipline of yoga and meditation.⁣⠀

Only 4 days till HighVibe and in honor of all the extra inhalation’s here’s 4 facts about the breath 💨 from @wearegaia 
1)Ancient yogis believed we only have so many breaths for our life. If this is so why not stretch our life out a bit longer by taking slow and deep breaths?
2)Breathing is the only autonomous system of the body that we can also control. This means that the body governs it but we can change how we breathe through conscious breathing practices such as pranayama.
3)Our breathe is an indicator of our mood and our mood is an indicator of our breath. This means that if we change how we breathe we can change our mood. It also means that when our mood changes so does our breath.
4)We breathe in and out of our nose during a yoga practice for a few reasons but the main one is that when we breathe like this we can’t take in so much air or expel so much air. So if we have to resort to opening our mouth to get more air it is an indicator that we have stepped into stressing or pushing our bodies. When we practice yoga, we don’t want to stress our bodies by doing open mouth breathing. Our practice should be a balance of effort with ease.

A couple weekends ago, I had the pleasure of attending a weekend workshop with Michelle C. Johnson, the author of Skill in Action: Radicalizing your Yoga Practice to Create a Just World. It’s been a challenge to put the experience of the training into words.

I notice that, as a white person, I am inclined to be silent in conversations that revolve around white supremacy and racism, because I’m afraid of saying “the wrong thing,” I’m afraid of revealing the ways in which I’m ignorant, and I’m afraid of inadvertently and unintentionally perpetuating systems of oppression.

My silence is a privilege. It is a privilege to not be faced with the labor of navigating emotional and psychological repercussions of racism on a regular basis. It is a privilege that conversations about oppression and white supremacy aren’t something I contend with unless I choose to. My whiteness keeps me sheltered, and I have allowed it to keep me silent.

What does it mean to be a spiritual practitioner today, amidst the reality that racism has been and is pervasive in our culture?

What does it mean to seek awareness, awakening, and enlightenment, and how can we not tie the conversation about spiritual practice into the conversation about oppression, white supremacy, and racial and social justice?

I am left with more and more questions after studying with Michelle. And I’m grateful to be asking them. I think asking the hard questions is the beginning of meaningful practice.

A couple weekends ago, I had the pleasure of attending a weekend workshop with Michelle C. Johnson, the author of Skill in Action: Radicalizing your Yoga Practice to Create a Just World. It’s been a challenge to put the experience of the training into words.

I notice that, as a white person, I am inclined to be silent in conversations that revolve around white supremacy and racism, because I’m afraid of saying “the wrong thing,” I’m afraid of revealing the ways in which I’m ignorant, and I’m afraid of inadvertently and unintentionally perpetuating systems of oppression.

My silence is a privilege. It is a privilege to not be faced with the labor of navigating emotional and psychological repercussions of racism on a regular basis. It is a privilege that conversations about oppression and white supremacy aren’t something I contend with unless I choose to. My whiteness keeps me sheltered, and I have allowed it to keep me silent.

What does it mean to be a spiritual practitioner today, amidst the reality that racism has been and is pervasive in our culture?

What does it mean to seek awareness, awakening, and enlightenment, and how can we not tie the conversation about spiritual practice into the conversation about oppression, white supremacy, and racial and social justice?

I am left with more and more questions after studying with Michelle. And I’m grateful to be asking them. I think asking the hard questions is the beginning of meaningful practice.

Our tendency is to add an extra layer of commentary to whatever is happening. It’s a habit we have—I like that story and want to replay it in my head over and over. I don’t like that emotion and want to push it away. Why did this happen to me? What if this? What if that?—And this leads to problems, problems, and more problems... -
The thing is, we can (re)learn to let go of that habitual reactive mode, that ongoing thought commentary that’s always getting us into trouble, and start living from a place of clarity, a place where thought comes up only as needed, a place where the right response to a situation just emerges, you just know what to do...living in the zone is easier than you think." -
