These two families in Allepey (close to my guesthouse where I was put up) literally adopted me. Almost all of my meals happened with them just like that. And i am really grateful that I got to eat home cooked food throughout my stay in Allepey. Chef Susheela Chechi (as i lovingly called her) was an amazing human being. Always smiling and welcomed me with open arms. She cooked me pyssam (Kerala dessert) when i was craving for it and also taught me pallapam and chicken curry (kerala food) and also offered me fresh todi(fermented coconut water) and mangoes. She fed me really well and at times with her own hands. We spoke in broken English and whatever lil malyalam and tamil i spoke. I had such an amazing time learning and cooking with her.. And then there were these school going girls Sneha, pooja, akshara, nitya.. Sneha was really happy to have me around. I went swimming with these girls every morning, also tried my hands at fishing with them, danced on mallu songs, played hide and seek and she also invited me over for lunch and dinner.
sneha's parents are really hardworking. they are the kindest souls I met. Her mom works in the agricultural field under such scorching heat, her uncle who stays with them lost his job sometime back as the company went bankrupt.
Their house got destroyed in the 2017 floods.
They managed to build it back half way with whatever monetary help they got from the government and in the process they exhausted all their savings too. But that didnt stop them from inviting me over to have food with them. They are such happy souls and content with whatever they have.. Also there was Ashkar from the guest house who was damn funny and the one who introduced me to Chef Susheela and told her about my pyssam cravings
I was an outsider and had nothing to do with them, but i was warmly welcomed. i extended my stay here when sneha kept on insisting that I stay back and ended up missing Binnale Art Festival, which i had been wanting to go since years but every moment spent here was worthwhile... and these people are the reason i know i am going to come back again for :) #kerala #backwaters #soloadventures
