A golden hour garden tour, via photos and video. This is my happy place, no doubt. I came home from my after-school art teacher gig (which is also great, but a decidedly different kind of great) and promptly got into the garden. I watered and weeded and spread compost and horse poo and looked and listened and sipped cider and was, as I generally am when my hands (and feet) are in the soil, so very much at ease. It’s largely greens and flowers and garlic and peas for now. After calling this house and wee patch of land home for nearly a decade, and having been gardening it all the while, I find I have less work to do each year as the perennial fruits, herbs, and flowers get more rooted and spread as they see fit. Sure, there are the annual veggies, flowers and herbs to tend to, and always there is watering and weeding, but it is deeply satisfying to see so many plant friends settled in and calling this space home as well.

After a generally crappy, challenging , and very human day in the #novellobreweryandfarm household, I’m going to do that curated life thing and just share something awesome. All these perennial vegetables came from out backyard and into an amazing Spring Greek Egg Lemon soup. The hop shoots and lovage contributed to the character of the broth and the chives and sorrel went on top for a lemony, zingy garnish. Perennial leafy greens and herbs are the MVP of spring. This was a very healing and restorative meal. #urbangarden #growwhatyoueat #foodnotlawns

Hummingbird haven heaven 🙏💜👍
There are many benefits to attracting pollinators for your sustainable domicile design- to the plants and for your viewing pleasure.

Have you heard of the @cropswap app? It is a FREE app, on iOS and Android! Yes! FREE! No fee for anybody!
You can post your extra plants, seeds, homegrown produce and gardening related items!
Local is great but HYPERLOCAL is better! I’ve swapped with people that live 5 minutes from me. I didn’t know them until this app introduced us to each other. This is how we fix a BROKEN food system and create community!
Download the app and start adding listings. This will encourage others to do the same. Don’t forget to share all over social media to help get more swappers! Go now!

🌱Hopefully planting more beets and carrots today. We want to do a lot more fermenting this year. Carrots were our favorite of everything we tried last year. As good as fermenting is for you, we didn't find a lot that we really liked. I made my family (and myself) eat it anyway because of those fab health benefits.❓ So my question for you, are there any fermenting cookbooks (if you can call them that) that you have enjoyed. We really need some help with different veggie combos and seasonings. I know that a lot of you ferment out there, 🙏 please share your fav resources.😁 Thanks so much!!

Tomato season!!
.
This is either an Aunt Ruby’s German or a @wildboarfarms Pink Berkeley Tie Dye. The mix up is courtesy of one of the dino-ninja gang led by Bandit and MiShelle Obama. They first invaded the patio garden (as usual) and then snuck into the house as I was going back and forth dumping kitchen graywater. One of them stepped into the tray of soil blocks and smashed the section containing these tomatoes. I fixed and salvaged the blocks, but the seeds definitely got mixed up a bit. My hunch is this is Aunt Ruby’s German Tomato.

My herb garden is 8 months old.
Which is a really misleading thing to say, because most of the herbs in here are 5 years old, because we transplanted them over from our old house last year. My herb patch used to be a quarter of this size, with all my plants densely planted into a mass. And in a few years, this will be all filled in again.

It can be hard to start perennial gardens because you don't get the instant satisfaction that comes from an annual garden. With perennials, you plant them, and it is years before the image you had in your mind while designing your garden, finally cones to fruition. You start with these tiny baby plants, and by the end of the first year, they have doubled in size, but still have so far to go.

But if you can be patient, it all pays off. Perennials are some of the earliest and strongest plants in my garden. They can survive bad weather and neglect, and still be there for me in the first moments of spring.

My lovage is a perfect example. I bought it as a 2 inch cute little sprig, and in the course of the years it's turned into a literal monster, growing taller then me. My Good King Henry has spread and seeded. I'll never not have horseradish no matter how hard I try. And I can't wait to see if my mint will out compete the lawn.

So much of gardening is about having a good imagination. A garden plot is a blank canvas, and like an artist, you need to imagine what you are creating as you start layering in your first steps.

I've been gardening for 15 years, so I have a bit of practice. I also grew up with my mother loving perennial flowers, so I know how quickly those empty spots fill in. But even so, coming here to such a large space was intimidating.

I didn't know where to start. I was worried about putting those first things in the wrong spot and having to start again. But as a student of art history I know, if you want to make a masterpiece, then scale plays into it.
I've created some gardens that I've proudly displayed. But my hope is that this will be "the one". Masterpieces take time, so I'll keep working, and keep being patient.

It’s heating up out there, remember to turn on your irrigation and give those plants a drink!
When raised bed soil dries out it can take a long time to get it saturated again. If you notice water running off the top of your soil, use your fingers or a trowel to check if the first few inches underneath are dry. When soil gets completely dry it can act “hydrophobic” and actually repel water. The fix is usually just a long soak and more consistent watering. #gardentips #healthysoil

To dig or not to dig?? These photos are a comparison of two onion beds, the first (darker soil) is ours, the second is our allotment neighbour's. (They are less than a metre away from our plot). We practise what is called "no dig". This means we carry out minimal disturbance to the soil, we never turn it over and when we have an abundance of weeds, we mulch. This ensures we leave intact all the incredible beneficial microbes, organisms, worms, insects etc that do us a huge amount of good both in terms of the health of the soil and our health as a result. Plus, it's a lot less work! At the end of each season we mulch a bit more with a layer of well rotted compost and the beds are ready for the next year's planting. Traditionally, most people (allotment neighbour included) dig. This means every year they turn over their soil, disturb all it's structure, breaking up all the little pockets of aeration created by worms and ants in addition to their casts (poo-which are great for soil) and exposing all the beneficial insects. Basically, they thrash the heck out of it! And you can see in the photos how much better our beds have fared with the recent prolonged lack of rainwater. Ours look fine! Our neighbour's ground on the other hand is dry and cracked and just looks unhealthy. No dig is not the "typical" traditional way to grow vegetables but there are so many benefits! If you are interested in finding out more @charlesdowding taught me everything I know. He is the oracle when it comes to no dig! (To note, our allotment neighbours grow a huge amount of food and are very experienced. I am in no way slating them, just comparing traditional and non traditional ways of doing things!)

What comes to your mind when you think about sage?
🍃
For me it's the energy cleansing attribute of burnt sage.
🔥
Some of sage's growing companions are strawberries, spinach and borage.
🌱
But I'm not so sure how to cook with it. Any ideas?

The people who built and owned my house previous to me, were members of a #daylilysociety in #richmondva There were tons of #lilies that I could see bloom on the edge of my property, but never got a chance to really see up close because of the overgrowth and the underbrush. I’ve been digging them up as I’ve been able and moving them to other places. This one is under my #dwarfnectarine in the front yard and is blooming for the first time. I’m stoked. Because I’ve had complaints from some visitors and because I want to minimize the amount of times I have to say, “Don’t step there!”, I’ve started to use a roll of thin orange plastic to mark out the lines and areas I plant things (I use chopsticks as stakes. They’re cheap, easy, and very effective.) It really was an anxiety inducing activity. Also did some night planting of a different variety of #strawberries that I bought this year. #PlantSomethingEveryDay #growyourownfood #urbangarden #backyardgarden #frontyardgarden #backtoedengarden #woodchips #backtoedenfilm #organic #organicgardening #notill #backyardchickens #chickens #blackfarmers #virginia #foodforest #goodsoil #foodnotlawns #blackmenwithgardens #BigFig2019

I’m experimenting with growing Okra and a few tomato plants in smart pots this season. I get a few puzzled looks when folks roll by but that’s how I feel when I roll by the miles of pointless green lawns. If you’re going to spend time or money on your yard might as well get a snack out of all that hard work. #foodnotlawns #foodnotlawnsoklahoma

No matter what else happens this year, let it be known that I beat the slugs, ants, squirrels, and birds to at least one strawberry...this tiny one...the first I saw ripen...didn’t even wash it. Kelly: 1 // Pests: 0

Ok fine. The ants are already eating one...and theirs is bigger. Still calling it a tie.

Our first front yard food forest install is complete. Sooo many tiny babies!!! A pear with four varieties growing on it, perennial broccoli, figs, currants, alpine strawberries and so much more. This family is going to walk out their front door and be able to pick from dozens of herbs, fruits and perennial vegetables. A true front yard foraging experience. Keep an eye out for photo updates on this one as everything explodes to life this year. #foodnotlawns #frontyardgarden #foodforest

It's getting to the time to start transplanting out the first sets of seedlings into the farm. Ian has been getting the next set of farm beds ready for me, and my kale and choys are hardened off. These salanova lettuce seedlings in the greenhouse need to start spending some time outside, along with some swiss chard that is starting to bulk up.
It's 6 weeks till my first market and things are starting to feel serious. Any mistakes at this point will affect my goal of being consistent at my markets. The focus on seed starting for successions needs to be more of a priority. Basically, it's time to hang a calendar and to really look at it everyday.

We are also still a few weeks out from our last frost date, so I've gotten into the habit of checking the weather multiple times a day.

I'm feeling very very behind still. But I'm also pretty sure, that is what a first farming season is about. And so I keep in mind that this season is about learning. The mistakes are about doing better in my future years. And no matter what, there still isn't a better feeling then being outside with your hands in the soil, growing food!

For those of you following along with my #wintersowing experiment (starting seeds in milk jugs when it’s still cold outside so they act like mini greenhouses), I can declare lettuce a resounding success!! I sowed the lettuce seeds in early March, taped the milk jugs shut, put them outside and did nothing to them until today. I took off the tape, transplanted them to my front door planter where I can now enjoy fresh lettuce for the next few weeks! Maybe not faster than starting indoors under growlights but cheaper, simpler, more energy efficient and less work 👍. The rest of the jugs are coming along more slowly but they are coming! The only complete failures so far are the basils 🤷🏻‍♀️. All the tomatoes, peppers and even eggplant germinated! Hopefully they’ll get to a transplantable size soon!

Radishes.
For when you want results.
For when you are impatient.
For when you need an easy win.
Grow radishes.

I am taking a moment to celebrate these French Breakfast radishes, which are the first things I've eaten from the new garden. Guess who's growing food again? Me, that's who.

Progress was made yesterday on the garden. Swipe to see what we planted in the pallet garden side and note that I should have planted the bok choy in a bigger space.
But the first pic will house corn, peas or beans, and giant pumpkins. Currently, it houses our two golden raspberry plants. And that rock border? Entirely done by Chica! I only asked her to do it and told her where to get the rocks. After also asking that they be on the grass edge and not the dirt she was off. It looks gorgeous and had her asleep quite quickly last night. ;)
