“Think about it: virtually every atrocity in the history of humankind was enabled by a populace that turned away from a reality that seemed too painful to face, while virtually every revolution for peace and justice has been made possible by a group of people who chose to bear witness and demanded that others bear witness as well.” – Melanie Joy
Every week, we are present. Every week, we bear witness to the animals being delivered to the slaughterhouse in Zurich with @zurichanimalsave.
We do this because we want to be informed. We want to be aware of what reality is, what it feels like, what it really means for those who are inside the vehicles we so frequently observe.
The animal industry likes to label those that take part in events like ours „extremists“. I would argue that nothing about what we do is extreme.
We merely stand there and witness the process of animals being delivered and led inside a facility. A process that has been normalized over long periods of time by the general public. What about nonviolently observing a „normal“ process in a peaceful way is extreme?
Personally, I can’t justify this process. There are many alternatives to animal products nowadays and I don’t see the reason why a sentient being has to go through this extremely painful and cruel experience. My intention is to make people see the animals, to give them a face and to make people aware that they are funding this – maybe involuntarily.
I urge you to make up your own mind by joining one of our vigils – whether you’re vegan or not, animal lover or not, it doesn’t matter.
But one thing I can assure you of – it won’t be easy.
